POEM:10 THE INCHCAPE ROCK
POET: ROBERT SOUTHEY
       ROBERT SOUTHEY

SUMMARY OF THE POEM
This poem tells u about the legends of the Inchcape Rock, a reef in the North Sea above 18km of the east coast of Angus, Scotland.
The story is about the good Abbot of Aberbrothok and the devilish Sir Ralph the Rover. The Abbot achieved the great feat of installing a bell on the dangerous Inchcape Rock that had previously caused many shipwrecks. His bell rang during the storms and issued an alert for the passing ships. So, the seamen knew where the rock is and could avoid the danger of an accident. They blessed the Abbot for his good work.

ABOUT THE POET
Robert Southey (1774-1843) was born in Bristol and educated at Oxford University. He is generally considered a member of the Romantic Movement and one of the Lake Poets like Wordsworth and Coleridge. Southey was appointed Poet Laureate in 1813. He wrote many poems, including narrative verse. His prose in now regarded more highly than his poetry. Southey wrote essays on moral issues, biographies, volumes of history and also edited other works.
He later died on March 21, 1843 after suffering an apoplectic seizure.
